The BEST Recruitment Advice

All summer has been leading up to this moment! In just a few short hours we will see all of you at McKimmon for the first rounds of recruitment! Have any questions? Contact your Rho Chi - she can give you directions to which parking deck you will be catching the bus at, calm any last minute nerves and she will, of course, gladly answer any outfit questions! We can't wait to meet you all! In the meantime, check out our Rho Chi's best advice for recruitment!

PNM

You may have heard of or seen the abbreviation "PNM" around a lot recently, and some of you are probably a little confused! In Sorority Recruitment Land, the term "PNM" stands for "Potential New Member". The women who have signed up for recruitment and are looking to join a chapter are all considered PNMs! While recruitment is hard for everybody, it's especially stressful for those that are going through - after all, chapter members and Rho Chis at least know what to expect! The best, all-encompassing advice we can give you is to not sweat the small stuff! Here are a few things our Rho Chi's felt were the most stressful moments of recruitment when they went through!

Sigma Rho Chis

By now, you all should have heard from your Rho Chi! We hope you've gotten a chance to meet with them (or just had a chance to talk with them!) and are feeling comfortable enough to ask questions and ask for advice! These girls will be your lifeline during recruitment - they're there for literally any problem that pops up! No matter how embarrassing, awkward or uncomfortable you may feel, please don't hesitate to contact your Rho Chi or any other.  Recruitment is a stressful process for everyone involved, but these girls have been working hard all summer to make sure that you all have the best experience possible! There is so much dedication and passion behind this group of women, and everyone is so excited to welcome you to the Greek community and help you find your home. Wondering why these girls were willing to give up their letters to help you find yours? We asked them why they wanted to be Sigma Rho Chis and here is what they had to say!

IT'S OFFICIAL!

If you're reading this, you've probably already signed up for recruitment - and it's a good thing, too, because the application is now closed! Our chapters can't wait to meet you this Friday! Each chapter and your Sigma Rho Chi's (recruitment counselors) have been preparing for you all summer. Today you will be getting a call from your Sigma Rho Chi setting up a time for you to meet and get to know your Rho Chi group! Essentially your Rho Chi will be your "big sister" throughout the process - there to guide you and answer any and all questions you might have, and to give unbiased advice when you need it! You'll get to know your Rho Chi better when you meet up and throughout the recruitment process, but before then a few of them want to share with you why they decided to go through recruitment!

Going Through Recruitment As An Upperclassman

Whether you are a freshmen who's been dreaming of going through recruitment since before graduation or it's taken you a year (or two! or three!) to warm up to the idea of Greek Life, we hope you are getting an idea of what it's like to be Greek at NC State and that our Sigma Rho Chi's advice is helping you decide what the best move for you is.  Today our recruitment counselors want to spread the word about rushing as an upperclassman! While it's true that a lot of freshmen are the ones rushing, there's a ton of sophomores, juniors and even seniors, who go through the process each year. Here's our recruitment counselor's advice for these women:

Balancing Sorority Life & Academics

We're back with more advice from our Sigma Rho Chis! Can you believe recruitment is this week!? We know you're stressing about school - so are we! It's hard to find that balance between school and all the other things you have going on. If you join a sorority will your grades suffer? This is a common misconception, but every sorority on our campus has academic standards that members are held to - Greek Life actually has consistently higher GPA's compared to non-affiliated students. Today our Rho Chi's are going to talk about balancing their academics with their sororities.

Stereotyping

Sororities - as well as Greek Life in general - tend to get a bad rap! There's a lot of information out there that is simply not true. We've all heard it, and we want you all to know the truth - sorority women are smart and dedicated leaders on our campus.  Our Sigma Rho Chi's are proof of this, and they're here to weigh in on how they feel about the rumors and misconceptions that many have about Greek Life.

And as for sorority girls specifically?

If this doesn't at least make you doubt the stereotypes you've heard, stay tuned next week for genuine advice and testimonials from our recruitment counselors.

Greek Life at NC State

Your first full week of the fall semester is complete! Before you enjoy another fun weekend at college, let us leave you with some information on our campus' Greek Life. Greek Life at NC State may not be as big as it is at other schools, but it's still a big part of our campus! About 11% of our student body is part of a greek organization, and these members are some of the most involved people on campus. Below are some of our Sigma Rho Chi's thoughts on NC State's Greek Life.

Interested in learning more about Greek Life and the four councils on our campus? Check out the NCSU Greek Life website, here, and always feel free to stop by the office and say hi! Happy weekend!

Ten Reasons Why YOU Should Go Greek

Greek Life is known for the friendships it creates, but there is so much more to it then that!  Here are the top ten reasons why YOU should go greek!

1. Involvement in Campus Activities

80% of Greek Life is involved in at least one activity outside of their fraternity or sorority membership! Many are involved in three or more!

2. Networking Opportunities

Of the top 50 corporations in America, 47% are led by a member of Greek Life.

3. Social Events

On top of all the great social interaction you will be experiencing in college, sorority membership provides you with fun social events.

4. Leadership Development

Being a part of a Greek organization provides you with the opportunities to be a leader of your peers (which consequently opens the door for more leadership opportunities!). Over 85% of student leaders on 730+ campuses are Greek. This year's Student Body President and Vice President, Senior Class President and Leader of the Pack are all members of Greek organizations on our campus!

5. Unique Housing Options

25 of NC State's Greek organizations maintain a chapter house, 13 of which are on campus. It sounds cliche, but you'll never have another chance to live with 40 of your closest friends.

6. Academic Support

Greek Life is held to high standards of scholarship excellence. Overall, 55% of Greek Life has a GPA higher than the all-campus GPA at NC State.  Each sorority chapter has members there to help you reach your academic potential!

7. Joining a Campus Tradition

The tradition of Greek societies has been around since the 1700's! The ritual you experience as a fraternity or sorority member will stick with you for a lifetime.

8. Connection to the Community Through Service

Every sorority on NC State's campus has a philanthropy (or several!) that they support. The average sorority woman serves upwards of 12 hours of community service per semester. Over $190,000 is donated to charity by members of NC State Greek Life every year!

9. Lifelong Sisterhood

Maybe the friendship is what you're looking for in an organization, maybe it's the numerous opportunities and connection and maybe it's something different altogether! Whatever it is, nothing can prepare you for the deep connections you will make as a member.  Any sorority woman could attest; these are deep and meaningful friendships you will keep long after you graduate with a degree.

10. Finding Your Fit Makes Our Big Campus Feel A Little Smaller!

On a campus with over 30,000 students, it's easy to feel lost in the shuffle. Greek Life is a means to find your place on campus and connects you with like-minded people. It's a lot easier to navigate our campus (and life in general) with a support system behind you!

For more information on joining the Greek Community, check out our recruitment page!
